CultiWise at Harper Adams: Smarter Weed Control

Harper Adams University Shropshire
81% Less Herbicide Docks in a Grass Ley
75% Less Herbicide Volunteer Beans in Winter Wheat
Client Harper Adams University
Location Shropshire

Identifying weeds within growing crops can be difficult, particularly in green-on-green situations such as docks in grass, volunteer beans in wheat and ryegrass in wheat. Blanket spraying can mean unnecessary herbicide use and, in grass leys, can also damage valuable clover.

The Challenge

The CultiWise drone took drone mapping footage of fields at Harper Adams University, Shropshire.

The high-resolution drone imagery was analysed by CultiWise AI Driven software to identify weeds across the field and create a targeted herbicide prescription map which could then be transferred directly to a sprayer for spot application.

The first UK trials produced impressive predicted savings:

81% less herbicide on docks in a grass ley
75% less herbicide on volunteer beans in winter wheat
Ryegrass was also successfully identified within wheat from subtle colour differences

The Harper Adams trials demonstrated how drone imagery, AI and precision spraying technology can work together to target weeds more accurately, reduce unnecessary applications and provide farmers with more precise field information.

Fly it. Map it. Target it.
